THE MYTH OF PASSION: HOW VALUES CAN BE YOUR COMPASS IN CAREER CHANGE
As a career coach and former HR professional, I've seen countless individuals struggle with the age-old question: "What should I do with my life?" Many fall prey to the myth of passion – the belief that there's one perfect career out there, waiting to ignite an all-consuming fire within us.
The reality? Passion is fickle. It can wane with time, and relying solely on it for career guidance can leave you feeling lost and frustrated. Besides, lost of people actually have several passions and being forced to choose will lead to disappointment.
Here's why I believe values are a far more reliable compass for navigating your career journey:
Values are constant: Your core values – things like integrity, growth, or creativity – remain relatively stable throughout your life. They act as guiding principles that help you make decisions that resonate with who you are.
Values provide direction: When you identify your core values, you gain a deeper understanding of what truly motivates you. This clarity allows you to explore careers that align with your values, creating a sense of purpose and fulfilment.
Values open doors: Focusing on transferable skills tied to your values makes you a more attractive candidate. Employers value candidates who can demonstrate strong work ethic, effective communication, or a commitment to continuous learning – all qualities rooted in core values.
So, how do you leverage your values for career exploration?
1) Self-reflection is key: Spend time reflecting on what truly matters to you. What kind of impact do you want to make? What work environment energises you? What brings you joy? Do you have any limiting beliefs that prevent you to try a new career? Journalling or brainstorming with a career coach can be helpful.
2) Explore, don't search: Don't get hung up on finding the perfect career. Instead, explore different fields and roles that align with your values. Informational interviews and volunteer work are fantastic ways to gain exposure. Take your time, this is not a race. Remember to enjoy the journey.
3) Embrace lifelong learning: Your tastes and needs will evolve over time, so be open to new experiences and keep learning. This growth mindset ensures your career exploration journey remains dynamic and fulfilling.
